The first
time anyone ever heard of video poker, believe it or not, was
in the mid 1970’s. The video poker machines were unleashed
upon the world right around the time personal computers were
introduced. That was the first time it became commercially
viable and economical to combine a monitor with a central
processing unit, although they were rather archaic by today’s
standards.
Si Redd’s Coin Machines, which was more commonly known as
SIRCOMA, and eventually turned into what we now call the
International Game Technology, made video poker a much more
time honored past time when they introduced Draw Poker to the
world at the end of the 70’s. Because of the creation of video
draw poker the brick and mortar casinos began placing these
machines next to their slot machines, which in turn made video
poker much more popular during the 80’s. What was the great
appeal to video poker? The intimidation factor was incredibly
low compared to the thought of having to learn how to play
poker at a table game.
In today’s land based casinos you will be able to find video
poker quite easily as it takes up a sizeable portion of the
casino floor. What is becoming increasingly more popular are
online casinos that allow for all the games that you would
find in a land based casino to be played in the comfort of
your own home. Video poker or online poker, which is how it is
called when playing at home, is the star of any of the
internet gaming site.
When beginning a game of video poker the most obvious first
step is having money in your casino account. When you have
money in the account you may begin wagering your credits by
pressing a deal button (many internet casinos will have a
different name for the deal button). At this point the player
will be given the opportunity to keep or discard one or up to
three cards in exchange for some new cards. Sometimes players
are given the option to exchange four cards or even the entire
deck; however that is only done in extreme circumstances where
a player has a hand that is considered ultimately un-winnable.
After a player has received their cards they then can bet.
When the betting is done there is a showdown where the
remaining players reveal their hands and discover who wins the
round.
